7 Out Of 10, Americans Find Cannabis “Morally Acceptable”

Fan followers for cannabis are touching the sky!

Did you know that in total 11 states, have legalized medical cannabis programs in full-scale?

It embraces over half of the country! Now, roughly 7 out of 10 Americans accept medical cannabis to be morally acceptable apart from other things (a survey by Gallup).

Moreover, previously doomed marijuana is now an “essential” and “morally righteous” by most of the Americans. Of course, the stigma still lingers in some parts of the country, hindering people to even try it. However, scientific studies and anecdotal evidence together have enticed most Americans to favor cannabis! Even doctors and patients are preferring MMJ recommendations for treating their ailments.

Is it hard to believe?

No worries, here are some surveys by Gallup that drove cannabis to another level. Take a glimpse at the recent one and its upshots.

A survey by Gallup on Cannabis

A new Gallup poll found out that almost 70% of Americans believe that smoking marijuana is ‘morally acceptable’. Only 28% of people feel getting stoned to be unethical. The remaining 2% of them either made no comment or said that “it's not a moral issue”.

Its newest finding concerning ‘cannabis and its use’ unveils an uptick in 5 points compared to that of last year’s survey. This poll reflects that America has a more educated population as to the therapeutic benefits of marijuana and its use.

The Gallup surveyed about 1028 Americans across all the United States. In addition to this, 70% of the population also find premarital sex, gambling, and divorce- all had the moral high ground. On the other hand, about 54 percent of respondents assert that the death penalty was an ethical punishment.

Also, the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) quickly entered the picture.

“Public opinion continues to drastically evolve in favor of marijuana’s legal and cultural status and it is time that the federal laws evolve as well. Politicians in Washington should take this opportunity ahead of the 2020 elections to move forward legislation, like the MORE ACT to both amend this failed policy and address the inequities and injustices it has brought for generations, particularly against communities of color.”

- Justin Strekal, Political Director, NORML

As he called for continuing reforming cannabis policies, he also stated- “As we approach Independence Day, it is reassuring to see that majorities of both sides of the ideological spectrum agree that adults should be free from the shackles of marijuana prohibition.”

Last year- Study of October 2019 shows that about 65 percent of respondents found smoking weed mortal in a similar poll.

When the same poll was asked in 1969, only 12% of people were in support of marijuana reforms.

Americans and their response to Marijuana Legalization

When the Americans were asked about their ideological approach to marijuana use- about 83% of liberals approved marijuana use compared to 55% of conservatives.

New Jersey’s eligible voters are contemplating a ballot question on legalizing marijuana this November. People’s opinions and beliefs have evolved over this. About 61 % said that they would vote YES on this issue. Whereas, 48 percent of them exclaimed that launching a legal, medical marijuana industry was a good idea.

Strekal also added, “As we approach Independence Day [July 4], it is reassuring to see that majorities of both sides of the ideological spectrum agree that adults should be free from the shackles of marijuana prohibition”.

Lawmakers and Medical Marijuana

Lawmakers of numerous states are on the route to legalize medical cannabis. They are trying to mend their state laws concerning marijuana and its practice. Last week, the state Assembly voted to decriminalize possession of two ounces of cannabis.

Advocates drew a different angle to this picture. They said that the laws are enforced on Black people more often and that too in huge numbers. Even though both white and black people use marijuana equally, it led to the arrest of Black people about 3.5 times more than white people.

Despite the overwhelming efforts and support of the American public, federal legislators neglected or rejected the calls for nationwide legalization, decriminalization, or rescheduling cannabis. They exclaim that more research and studies are required! Probably, the existing ones aren’t enough!

Conclusion

Gallup has been surveying many moral acceptances of numerous cases since 2001. Human cloning, medical testing on animals, etc., are a few of them! It started tracking how Americans felt about drinking alcohol and smoking cannabis only since 2018.

As the US seems to navigate to the global economic downturn because of the COVID-19 pandemic, reforming cannabis policies looks like a more and more attractive option for tax revenue. Plus, politicians will closely follow the sales of medical cannabis.

Therefore, a prediction has been made that cannabis may become federally legal by the end of 2021. It is possible as a lot has changed in a year, and we all are witness to those developments!
